The Date
He stopped what he was doing when he heard his doorbell ring. As he stood up, he looked down at his work, smiled, and pulled the cover over it as he didn’t want to spoil the surprise. As he walked to the door, he stopped in front of the mirror to make sure there was nothing amiss. He noticed a small spot on his chin and wiped it off with his finger. He then smiled at himself; knowing that he looked perfect; and turned to open the door.
Mia Long was excited. This was to be her first real date after a very painful divorce a year ago. This date had been a long time coming and when he finally asked her out Mia had almost wept with happiness. They had worked together for several years and were friends. Well, the kind of friends that are a little too flirty around the water cooler and keep eye contact just a little bit too long. It was strange that she’d had that kind of reaction to him because she had been very much in love with her husband. Tony had been an amazing, attentive, and loving husband, but his work friendship went a little farther than too flirty at the water cooler and when she finally figured out that Tony and his secretary were more than just friends, she’d been devastated. Mia kicked Tony out, filed for divorce, and spent the last year in a spiral of shame and resentment. He’d been her high school sweetheart, her partner in crime, her best friend, and when it was over she’d felt like he’d died instead of shacking up across town with his secretary.
